Poco Mas Outruns Lafayette Opponents For Surprise Victory at Downs Course Murchison Juvenile Defeats* Best Effort to Be Repeater; Valdina Trial Is Unplaced LOUISVILLE, Ky.. April 25.— Poco Mas. a rangy son of the unfamiliar Swahili, flaunted the colors of the Bluebird Stock Farm to a convincing triumph in the Lafayette Stakes before a large charity week attendance at Churchill Downs here this afternoon. The veteran jockey, George Seabo. had the mount on the bay Texas-bred and, sending him to the front soon after the start, cut the corners and won by a length and a half at the direct expense of C. C. Tanners Best Effort. J. Warfield Rodgers Roi Rouge was a steady third, a similar distance back and two lengths before Best Efforts stablemate. Wise Admiral. Eight of the most precocious kindergart-ners developed thus far in the 1944 turf season appeared for this ,000 added run of four and a half furlongs, and the Tanner entry was installed a strong choice. Poco Mas paid 0.80, though this marked his i third success in five starts. He is, inci- J dentally, owned by Kenneth Murchison, a I member of the Texas Breeders Association, who bred and reared him at his Bluebird Stock Farm near Dallas. The Lafayette netted ,475. Incidentally, this afternoons stake brought the first defeat of C. U. Yaegers j j Valdina Trial, who had captured four purses in as many starts last winter at | i i J I j j | i New Orleans Fair Grounds and was the second choice. Poco Mas was not long finding his way into the van in the stake and killed off Valdina Jane rounding the turn. Best Effort was always right on top of the pace and put in a game performance in a futile effort to * overhaul Poco Mas in the run by the stands. j Roi Rouge made up ground and finished out stoutly on the outside. Valdina Trial had [ some early speed but stopped. Provoker I dropped out of it at the break.
