O' Cinema Weekend Edition, September 29-30, 2007 examiner.com SF 21 ARTS PETER BROWN DIGITAL BREAKDOWN Latest 'Fantastic Four' is a bore Embrace 'The enjoy funny 'Metalocalypse' FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER 2-DISC POWER COSMIC EDITION The second installment of a planned trilogy, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" isn't for die-hard fans of the comic book franchise the whole fiasco over not showing Galactus will be a travesty of justice in their eyes but as far as Hollywood superhero films go, it gets the job done in unspectacular fashion. Here, the four super-powered humans must fight off a creature called the Silver Surfer, the herald of the planet-eating creature Galactus. The computer work on the Surfer (and the Torch) is spectacular. This special-edition DVD has some great stuff on it, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, alternate audio track commentaries, an hour-long documentary of the making of the film and many deleted scenes. It's just too bad the film isn't better.

THE WAR "The War," PBS' brilliant sevenpart film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history of World War II from four emotional American perspectives, all from different parts of the country. The miniseries spans 15 hours and is narrated by Keith David, featuring voiceovers by Tom Hanks, Josh Lucas, Bobby Cannavale, Samuel L. Jackson and Eli Wallach.
With commentary from Burns and Novick, four featurettes on the making of the film, deleted scenes that are actually worth checking out and a from-theset photo gallery, this is a powerful miniseries any history buff will drool over. Swarms of murderous kitties? Check. Hilarious animated Adult Swim comedy? Check. "Metalocalypse Season One" follows the on- and off-stage adventures of a Norwegian death metal band called Dethklok, which has become the most famous heavy metal band in the world by creating as much death, destruction and mayhem as possible. The DVD includes 20 episodes from the first season as well as cast interviews, instructional guitar video and commentary. Price: $29.98.
